2023 BYD Dolphin spotted in Malaysia before launch

Ahead of the launch of the BYD Dolphin later this month on July 28, the electric vehicle (EV) has been sighted in the wild at IOI Mall Puchong. This example was sighted wearing a generous amount of camouflage to disguise its identity, but the general shape of the car and the phrase “A New Wave Is Coming” on the sides are obvious giveaways – the latter was used for BYD Cars Malaysia’s teaser.

Based on these photos, the Malaysian-spec Dolphin will be offered with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), as suggested by the sensor near the rear-view mirror. A model-specific Linglong Comfort Master tyres wrapped around 17-inch wheels are also seen, with the former having little dolphin symbols on the sidewall, which is nice quirk.

The wrapped car was photographed next to the previous-generation Toyota Vios, which provides a better sense of its size. Official figures place the Dolphin at 4,150 mm long, 1,770 mm wide, 1,570 mm tall and with a wheelbase of 2,700 mm. Disregarding length because the Vios is a sedan whereas the Dolphin is a hatchback, the EV is wider by 40 mm.

For a comparison involving something in hatchback territory, the Honda City Hatchback is 4,345 mm long, 1,748 mm wide, 1,488 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,600 mm. That makes it longer overall than the Dolphin, although its narrower, not as tall and is down on wheelbase.

Rumoured to have a starting price of under RM100,000, the Dolphin would be in contention to be the most affordable EV in Malayia if true. At present, the Neta V lays claim to the title with an asking price of RM99,800. For context, the Dolphin has already gone on sale in Thailand, where it starts from 699,999 (RM92,975) for the Standard Range, while the higher-spec Extended Range goes for 859,999 baht (RM114,205).

Over there, the Standard Range features a Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery with an energy capacity of 44.92 kWh that offers up to 410 km of range following the NEDC standard. The battery powers a front-mounted electric motor rated at 94 PS and 180 Nm of torque, which is good for a 0-100 km/h time of 12.3 seconds.

Meanwhile, the Extended Range has a more powerful electric motor with 204 PS and 310 Nm which is juiced by a 60.48-kWh battery providing up to 490 km on a full charge. Both variants support vehicle-to-load (V2L) and AC charging at a maximum of 7 kW, but there’s a difference when it comes to peak DC charging rate: the Standard Range will do 60 kW while the Extended Range can handle 80 kW.

No intention to phase out AP system in Malaysia despite direct import of Tesla EVs – Tengku Zafrul Aziz

The Malaysian government has no intention of phasing out the approved permit (AP) system for vehicle imports, minister of investment, trade and industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said, reported Bernama.

“We are not discussing [abolishing the AP system] yet; there is no intention at this point of time,” Zafrul told reporters, adding that the AP system would still be in use even though the approved company is another carmaker, as long as it brings the technology that Malaysia seeks.

The AP system remains in effect even though the government has allowed Tesla Motors to sell its vehicles in Malaysia without the AP rules required of other car companies selling cars in Malaysia, as the American EV maker was the first approved applicant in the BEV Global Leaders initiative by the ministry of investment, trade and industry (MITI).

“The AP [system] is still there. What we have announced is that we want [the companies] to bring the technology. We are consistent not just to Tesla, but to whichever that brings the value that Tesla can bring, we are going to treat it consistently. It’s not exclusive for Tesla,” the minister said.

Last Friday, prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim met Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk through a video call, which was also attended by minister of investment, trade and industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz; minister of communications and digital Ahmad Fahmi bin Mohamed Fadzil and SpaceX senior director Lauren Dreyer.

The prime minster said that Musk has agreed to make significant investments in Malaysia including the setting up of Tesla’s Malaysian headquarters in Cyberjaya, as well as to collaborate with the government through SpaceX and the satellite-based internet service Starlink, reported Bernama.

The Tesla Model Y has been priced on the Tesla Malaysia configurator site from RM199,000

The Tesla Malaysia online configurator came online last week, bringing with it the prices for the Model Y in three variants – the Model Y RWD from RM199,000, the Model Y Long Range AWD from RM246,000, and the Model Y Performance AWD from RM288,000; prices include SST.

The configurator also brought pricing for a range of optional upgrades, such as black, silver or blue paint for RM5,000, red multi-coat paint for RM10,000, a black/white interior scheme for RM5,000, a 20-inch ‘Induction’ wheel upgrade for RM10,000, Enhanced Autopilot for RM16,000 and Full Self Driving for RM32,000. Orders can now be placed for a non-refundable RM1,000 fee, and deliveries are estimated to begin early 2024.

Laporan berkenaan memetik Aturan 17A Kaedah-Kaedah Lalulintas 1959 menjelaskan adalah menjadi kesalahan untuk menggunakan telefon bimbit ketika memandu kenderaan melainkan dengan penggunaan alat hands-free atau pemegang telefon, yang mana dalam keadaan itu dibolehkan untuk meleret skrin sentuh telefon yang dipasangkan kepada pemegang.

Menurut Pengarah Jabatan Siasatan dan Penguatkuasaan Trafik PDRM, Komisioner Datuk Seri Mat Kasim Karim, peraturan berkenaan sangat jelas dan pengguna jalan raya dan pemandu tidak boleh memegang telefon sama ada ketika kenderaan bergerak ataupun sedang berhenti di lampu isyarat atau ketika jalan sesak.

“Menggunakan telefon bimbit tanpa pemegang khasnya ketika dalam pemanduan bermaksud pemandu mengalihkan perhatiannya daripada jalan raya. Ini akan menyebabkan bahaya dan menyusahkan pengguna jalan raya yang lain ketika mereka ingin menyambung pemanduan, misalnya,” ujarnya.

Dalam keadaan ingin mengambil telefon yang terjatuh di lantai kenderaan ketika memandu juga akan menyebabkan pemandu hilang kawalan, katanya. Tanpa alat hands-free atau pemegang, pemandu hanya boleh menggunakan telefon ketika berhenti di tempat parkir — berhenti di laluan kecemasan tanpa sebab yang sahih juga adalah satu kesalahan.

Tentang penggunaan jam pintar ketika memandu pula, beliau memaklumkan tindakan itu dibolehkan memandangkan itu dikelaskan sebagai alat hands-free.

Pada 2020, polis mengumumkan penggunaan telefon bimbit tanpa bantuan pemegang atau alat hands-free ketika memandu bukan lagi kesalahan boleh dikompaun, sebaliknya pelaku boleh disaman dan dibawa ke mahkamah, dengan denda sehingga RM1,000 atau penjara sehingga tiga bulan. Kesalahan berulang pula boleh digandakan denda tersebut.

Mercedes-Benz, Volvo guna penyambung pengecas NACS, boleh akses jaringan Supercharger Tesla

Mercedes-Benz dan Volvo telah bersetuju untuk menggunakan penyambung pengecas EV dengan Standard Pengecas Amerika Utara (NACS) yang sama dengan Tesla, membolehkan kerete elektrik dari kedua-dua jenama itu menggunakan jaringan Supercharger Tesla.

Bermula 2025, model-model EV pasaran Amerika Utara (Amerika Syarikat, Kanada dan Mexico) kedua-dua jenama itu akan dilengkapi dengan port pengecas NACS tersebut. Sebelum tarikh berkenaan, Mercedes-Benz dan Volvo akan menawarkan penyambung penyesuai (adapter) untuk port CCS yang boleh digunakan pada pengecas yang menggunakan penyambung NACS.

Pada Jun tahun ini, organisasi standard automotif dunia iaitu SAE International mengumumkan bahawa ia akan menstandardkan penyambung NACS (SAE J3400) bagi memastikan semua pembekal dan pengeluar boleh menggunakan, mengilangkan atau memasang atur penyambung pengecas pada EV dan stesen pengecas di seluruh Amerika Utara.

Sebelum Volvo dan Mercedes-Benz, General Motors, Rivian dan beberapa EV dari jenama lain sudahpun turut menggunakan penyambung NACS berkenaan.

Penyambung NACS ini sebelum ini dikenali sebagai penyambung pengecas Tesla, dan ia telah digunakan oleh jenama EV Amerika Syarikat itu sejak 2012. Nama NACS ini diumumkan oleh SAE dan dalam masa yang sama Tesla turut sudah membenarkan jenama lain menggunakan standard yang serupa serta mendakwa bahawa rekaannya adalah lebih kompak.

Dalam kenyataan yang dikeluarkan oleh Tesla, NACS merupakan standard pengecas paling mudah dijumpai di Amerika Utara, dengan nisbah NACS kepada CCS adalah 2:1.

Dengan menggunakan hanya satu standard akan memudahkan implementasi serta menambah lebih banyak stesen pengecas, selari dengan apa yang syarikat pengeluar kereta mahu tawarkan kepada pelanggan. Ia ditambah dengan liputan luas yang sudahpun disediakan oleh jaringan Supercharger Tesla yang sudah pun tersedia di rantau tersebut.

DRB-Hicom dan Geely bekerjasama tarik pelaburan ke dalam AHTV — sasar RM32 bilion nilai pelaburan

Melalui persidangan Global Investors & Vendors Convention 2023 anjuran Proton, DRB-Hicom dan Zhejiang Geely Holding (Geely) berganding bahu untuk menarik pelaburan terhadap Automotive High Tech Valley (AHTV), sebagai perkembangan susulan daripada MoU yang dimeterai pada April tahun lalu.

AHTV disasarkan untuk menjadi hab bagi pengeluaran Next Generation Vehicles (NxGV) seperti yang digariskan di bawah Dasar Automotif Nasional 2020.

Persidangan yang diadakan di Kuala Lumpur itu melibatkan lebih dariada 200 peserta yang terdiri daripada pegawai agensi kerajaan, serta pihak pengurusan DRB-Hicom, Geely dan Proton serta vendor tempatan dan 42 pembekal automotif dari China. Majlis turut dihadiri oleh Menteri MITI, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz.

Persidangan berkenaan juga tidak hanya bertindak sebagai platform untuk mempertemukan vendor dan pembekal tempatan dan antarabangsa, tetapi juga bertujuan untuk memperlihatkan perkembangan yang sedang berlaku di AHTV yang bertempat di Tanjung Malim. Interaksi juga berlangsung untuk menjelaskan insentif yang diberikan oleh kerajaan serta kelebihan bagi syarikat yang berhasrat untuk menjalankan perniagaan di sana.

Matlamatnya adalah untuk menjadikan AHTV sebagai pusat kajian dan pembangunan bagi komponen automotif teknologi yang diiktiraf di peringkat global, yang termasuk di dalamnya kajian universiti yang disasarkan untuk memperluas kemampuan pekerja automotif Malaysia dan membantu negara menjadi pelopor dalam pendidikan kejuruteraan automotif, teknologi maklumat, kepintaran buatan dan pembangunan perisian.

Menurut Pengarah Urusan Kumpulan DRB-Hicom yang juga Pengerusi Proton, Datuk Seri Syed Faisal Albar, persidangan berkenaan adalah satu daripada usaha untuk menarik pelaburan asing ke dalam negara malalui AHTV, dengan sasaran pelaburan berjumlah RM32 bilion untuk projek berkenaan.

“Usaha bersama serta minat mendalam yang ditunjukkan oleh vendor dari China akan membantu menarik sokongan terhadap projek berkenaan daripada kerajaan China, yang berupaya membawa kepada lebih banyak pelaburan ke dalam AHTV dan Malaysia,” ujarnya.

“Usaha sama Geely dengan Proton dan sokongan kedua-duanya terhadap projek ini telah menampakkan hasil melalui beberapa pelabur dan pembekal komponen beroperasi di Tanjung Malim, dan ekosistem teknologi tinggi mereka pastinya akan memainkan peranan penting dalam memajukan lagi projek berkenaan ke hadpaan,” tambah beliau.

Mobile phone use while driving permitted when using handsfree kit, phone holder; smartwatch use allowed

Motorists would not be breaking the law if they use hands-free kits or phone holders when operating the touch screen of a smartphone to make or receive phone calls, The Star has reported.

The report cites Rule 17A of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 as saying that it is an offence to use a cellphone while driving a vehicle unless it is with a a hands-free kit or phone holder, and as such, it is permissible to swipe and touch the screen of a cellphone that is mounted in a car with a holder.

According to federal police traffic investigation and enforcement department (JSPT) director, commissioner Datuk Seri Mat Kasim Karim, the law is clear on the matter that no motorist should be holding a cellphone when a car is in motion or even when at a standstill during traffic jams or at traffic lights.

“Using cellphones without a holder during such situations would mean diverting their attention away from the road. This can pose a danger and inconvenience when a driver is required to resume driving when traffic starts moving again,” the JSPT director told The Star.

Instances of accidentally dropping a phone on the vehicle floor and attempting to retrieve it while driving can also lead to the driver losing control of their vehicle, Mat Kasim added. In the absence of a phone holder or hands-free kit, motorists may only only their phones by stopping their vehicles in a parking lot, and reminded motorists that stopping in an emergency lane without a valid reason is an offence.

When asked if the use of smartwatches while driving is allowed, Mat Kasim said this is permitted as smartwatches are not considered hand-held devices.

In 2020, the police announced that using a cellphone without the aid of a holder or hands-free kit while driving was no longer just a compoundable offence, and instead the offenders issued with summonses for the offence would be brought to court, and could face a fine of up to RM1,000 or imprisonment of up to three months, and the penalties are doubled for repeat offenders.

There is ample research that finds cellphone usage while driving can lead to accidents, said Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) associate professor Law Teik Hu. “Drivers who are partially focused on the road has only a 50% ability to spot oncoming hazards and a 50% ability to react to avert the danger,” Law said.

“This declines further if a driver is texting with his cellphone, even at low speeds. Motorcyclists, especially ehailing riders who often use their cellphones while riding their machines, are at higher risk of an accident,” he added.

2023 Kawasaki Modenas Ninja 650 in Malaysia, priced at RM35,200 and RM35,900

Joining the Versys 650 and Z650 middleweights in Malaysia is the 2023 Modenas Ninja 250, from Kawasaki and rebadged and distributed by EMOS. Two colour schemes are available, Metallic Matte Graphene/Steel Gray at RM35,200 and the classic Kawasaki Lime Green/Ebony at RM35,900.

The Ninja is updated over the previous generation model with all-new bodywork resembling the Kawasaki ZX-10R superbike. Like the Z650 naked sports, the Ninja 650 also gets Kawasaki Traction Control (KTRC) with three user selectable modes.

Also standard on the Ninja 650 is riding modes of which there are three – Sport, Road, and Rain. LED lighting is now used throughout out, including the new headlight design which follow’s Kawasaki’s superbike twin headlight style.

Engine-wise the Ninja 650 comes with the same power plant as the Versys 650 and Z650, a liquid-cooled parallel-twin displacing 649 cc. Power is claimed to be 68 PS at 8,000 rpm with 64 Nm of torque at 6,700 rpm, going through a six-speed gearbox and chain final drive to the rear wheel.

Inside the cockpit a full-colour TFT-LCD screen displays all the necessary information. Bluetooth connectivity to the rider’s smartphone comes standard with the Kawasaki Rideology app that allows for management of calls, messages and notifications.

Front suspension is done with 41 mm diameter telescopic forks and a preload-adjustable monoshock at the back. As for braking, twin 330 mm diameter discs on the front wheel are clamped by two-piston callipers while the rear wheel gets a single-piston calliper and 220 mm disc, while two-channel ABS is standard equipment.

EVx 2023: Lotus Eletre, world’s first hyper SUV with up to 905 hp/985 Nm, 0-100 in 2.95s – see it this weekend!

The paultan.org Electric Vehicle Expo (EVx) 2023 is just around the corner now, happening from July 22-23 at Setia City Convention Centre. Malaysia’s largest EV event is back and better than before, with a host of car brands and service providers participating.

There will be a wide range of EVs on display too, from city cars to one hyper SUV. The Lotus Eletre, branded by its maker as the world’s first hyper SUV, packs in plenty of pace and a rather surprising price tag, considering the performance on tap.

The Eletre may look world’s apart from Hethel’s famous sports cars, but the company says that it took the core principles and Lotus DNA from almost 75 years of sports car design and engineering, and evolved them into an all-new lifestyle car.

All versions get a dual-motor AWD powertrain. The base Eletre and the Eletre S makes 605 hp and 710 Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds and a 80-120 km/h time of 2.2 seconds. Top speed is 258 km/h.

That’s plenty fast already, but the Eletre R is the hyper one, with 905 hp, 985 Nm of torque and a 0-100 km/h time of 2.95 seconds. The 80-120 km/h overtaking time is done in under 1.9 seconds and a top speed of 265 km/h, making it the world’s fastest dual-motor fully-electric SUV according to Lotus.

All three variants get a 112 kWh battery, which provides the Eletre and Eletre S with a range of 600 km on the WLTP cycle. The range-topping Eletre R trades some of the range for its prodigious performance, but still manages a respectable and practical 490 km WLTP. Charging is as fast as the SUV itself – thanks to an 800-volt electrical architecture that supports up to 350 kW DC fast charging, going from 10-80% state of charge takes just 20 minutes.

Besides Lotus, a host of brands are participating in EVx, with the likes of Mercedes-Benz and smart (represented by Hap Seng Star and Hap Seng Smart respectively), BMW and MINI (through Wheelcorp Premium), Audi, Volvo, Hyundai, BYD, GWM and Lotus all set to showcase their all-electric offerings. Other exhibitors include Petronas, Gentari, JomCharge (via EV Connection), Kineta, evhub.my, Bank Islam, Bank Muamalat, V-Kool and Dodo Mat.
