BMW Malaysia, EV Connection unveil first Mobile Charging Vehicle in Malaysia – up to 20 kWh, 15 kW DC

BMW Group Malaysia has partnered with electric vehicle charging solutions provider EV Connection for the development of the first mobile EV charging vehicle powered by repurposed BMW and MINI electric vehicle batteries, shown at the Malaysia Autoshow 2023 that is taking place this week.

The mobile charging vehicle is a prototype that houses 16 units of repurposed BMW battery modules which have a state of health of approximately 70%, providing a capacity of 20 kWh and which can provide up to 30 kVA of three-phase AC power.

The Nissan Vanette shown in these images is currently the sole prototype, and actually merely serves as a mobile platform for the charging facility; future iterations may use a different make or model of vehicle, according to an EV Connection representative.

For vehicle charging, the mobile charging vehicle packs what is originally a 30 kW DC charger that has been reduced in output to 15 kW – to prolong battery life – located at the rear of the vehicle, and thus can offer a rescue recharge to provide up to two EVs with enough battery charge to reach the nearest charging station.

In addition to rescuing of electric vehicles in need of battery charge, the mobile charging vehicle also provides enough electricity in disaster zones, to power up to eight homes at full capacity.

The mobile charging vehicle comes into the second-life battery programme that is part of the initiative by BMW Group Malaysia, who aims to divert all retired EV batteries for the expansion of their electrification possibilities. These will expand into high-voltage solutions to provider for urban charging hubs, mobile generators for disaster zones as well as for electrification in rural areas in the future, says BMW Malaysia.

“The repurposing of these end-of-life batteries from our electrified vehicles essentially places them back into the loop to continue serving the EV ecosystem, after they have completed their lifecycle in our vehicles. This recognises the significant value of the precious metals that are in our batteries, which are finite resources on this planet, and prolongs their use as much as possible before they are eventually retired,” said BMW Group Malaysia head of corporate communications and sustainability Sashi Ambi.

“EV Connection is honoured to be part of this unprecedented innovative initiative with a trusted automotive brand such as BMW in the development of this mobile charger. It is our hope that we will be able to elevate the range anxiety of EV drivers and contribute towards driving the electrified mobility revolution in Malaysia,” said EV Connection technical director Che Hang Seng.

2023 BMW i4 M50 EV debuts in Malaysia – all-electric M with 544 PS/795 Nm, 510 km range, from RM430k

First announced for our market last year, BMW Malaysia has finally given the BMW i4 M50 its Malaysian premiere, with the all-electric performance Gran Coupe making its local debut today at the Malaysia Autoshow 2023. Joining the standard i4 eDrive40 variant in the local line-up, the car is the first electrified M-badged vehicle to be officially introduced here.

Aside from being fitted with BMW M 50 Years emblems as standard, the Malaysian-spec M50 rides on 20-inch BMW Individual Style 862 aero alloy wheels and is kitted with an M Sport package, M rear spoiler in body colour and a black rear diffuser insert. There’s also an extended Shadowline package that adds a gloss black grille surround, front corner air inlets and door mirrors, plus dark grey pinstriping on the grille and rear diffuser.

Inside, the variant features carbon fibre trim finishers, M Sport front seats, M tricolour seat belts and M Anthracite headliner in addition to an M Sport steering wheel. Like the eDrive40, the M50’s dash is wrapped in Sensatec faux leather, but ups the upholstery finishing to Vernasca leather, and there’s also a sliding glass sunroof, which the standard i4 doesn’t have.

Otherwise, interior equipment is identical to the eDrive40. There’s a Curved Display panel with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch centre touchscreen, both running the latest BMW Operating System 8, as well as triple-zone climate control, keyless entry, push-button start and power-adjustable front seats with driver’s side memory, among others.

Also present is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a Qi wireless charger, a hands-free powered tailgate and a 17-speaker, 525 watt Harman Kardon surround sound system as well as the automaker’s IconicSounds Electric synthesised “engine” sounds.

Unlike the rear-wheel drive, single motor eDrive40, the M50 features an all-wheel drive configuration with the addition of a front motor. This produces 258 PS (or 190 kW) and 430 Nm of torque. As for the rear unit, it delivers 313 PS (or 230 kW) and 365 Nm, which is 27 PS (20 kW) and 65 Nm less than the eDrive40’s 340 PS and 430 Nm.

Nonetheless, total system output is way up, with 544 PS (or 400 kW) and 795 Nm on tap. These combined figures are available to drivers for up to 10 seconds using the Sport Boost function, and it enables the M50 to complete the 0-100 km/h run in 3.9 seconds, which is nearly two seconds quicker than the eDrive40. Top speed is an electronically-limited 225 km/h, up from the 190 km/h on the standard i4.

The motors are juiced by an 83.9 kWh (80.7 kWh nett) lithium-ion battery, the same as that on the Drive40, and so the higher performance means a sacrifice in operating range, in this case by around 80 km, with the M50 able to do up to 510 km on a single charge. Charging takes eight hours and 15 minutes using an 11 kW AC charger, while DC charging – at up to 200 kW – gets the battery from a 10 to 80% state-of-charge in just 31 minutes.

In terms of safety and driver assistance systems, the M50 comes with the full Driving Assistant Professional package, which has autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane centring assist, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring and collision prevention in its kitbag.

Additionally, there’s also adaptive high beam, park assist, a 360-degree camera system, acoustic pedestrian warning and Active Protection (similar to Mercedes-Benz’s Pre-Safe).

As for exterior colour choices, the i4 M50 is available in Mineral White, Black Sapphire, M Brooklyn Grey, M Portimao Blue and Sanremo Green, matched with either black (with contrasting blue stitching) or Cognac Vernasca leather upholstery.

Pricing for the BMW i4 M50 starts from RM430,210. Extending to a five-year unlimited mileage warranty with free scheduled service programme will bring the price of the car to RM445,800. As for the battery, it’s covered by an eight-year/160,000 km battery warranty (whichever comes first).

2023 BMW Motorrad CE04 Malaysian price, RM59,800

Getting it’s official Malaysian price at the 2023 Malaysia Autoshow is the 2023 BMW Motorrad CE04 electric scooter, which retails at RM59,800. First shown to the Malaysian public in January this year, pricing for the CE04 is on-the-road excluding insurance and 120 units will be brought into Malaysia.

Using a frame mounted electric motor and belt drive to the rear wheel, the CE04 produces the electric equivalent of 42 hp at 4,900 rpm and 62 Nm of torque at 1,500 rpm, the equivalent of a 500 cc engine in the combustion engine motorcycle world. Designed for urban use, the CE04 gets a claimed 130 km range from its 8.9 kWh lithium-ion battery.

BMW Motorrad says the CE04 gets from zero to 50 km/h in 2.6 seconds in traffic light sprints, with a maximum speed of 120 km/h, which just about allows the CE04 to travel on a toll highway.

Charging is done using the CE04’s integrated charger utilising either domestic current, Type 2 wallbox or public charging station. Charging time with a typical 2.3 kW charger takes four hours and 20 minutes from zero capacity, while quick charging, assuming a Type 2 charger output of 6.9 kW, takes an hour and 40 minutes, or 0-80% in 65 minutes.

Braking uses twin 265 mm diameter discs on the 15-inch front wheel and 120/70 tyre, clamped by dual four-piston callipers. Meanwhile, the rear 15-inch wheel is shod with a 160/60 tyre, stopped with a single 265 mm disc and single-piston floating calliper with BMW Motorrad two-wheel ABS as standard.

The CE04 is held up in front by a single-bridge telescopic fork with 110 mm spring travel while the back is suspended by a single-sided swingarm and central spring strut, giving 92 mm of suspension travel. Tipping the scales at 231 kg (for comparison, the Yamaha TMax 560 weighs 220 kg), the CE04 has a seat height of 780 mm.

For the rider, the CE04 offers three ride modes – Eco, Rain and Road – while the fourth ride mode option, Dynamic, is only available as an ex-factory option. A 10.25-inch TFT colour display with Integrated Map Navigation comes with connectivity powered by the BMW Motorrad Connected App and includes turn-by-turn navigation, vehicle status and statistics.

Using the Connected app, the rider is able to view estimated time required for charging, and how long the battery charge will last and the distance it will enable the rider to travel. Other riding conveniences include a USB charging port in the dash, storage compartment with USB ports and 12 Volt socket.

The rider can also access a helmet storage compartment with courtesy light, and the CE04 comes with lighted flexcase, keyless ride and reversing aid.

2023 BMW iX1 xDrive30 M Sport launched in Malaysia – 313 PS, 64.7 kWh, 440 km EV range; from RM286k

BMW Malaysia has officially introduced the iX1, which is the all-electric version of the third-generation U11 X1 revealed globally last June. For our market, the iX1, which is the first in the X1’s history, will be offered in a sole xDrive30 M Sport variant priced at RM285,800 on-the-road without insurance, inclusive of the optional five-year extended warranty and service package.

Featuring the carmaker’s fifth-generation eDrive technology, the iX1 has two electric motors – one for each axle – that are each rated at 190 PS (188 hp or 140 kW) and 247 Nm of torque. The all-wheel drive setup has a total system output of 272 PS (268 hp or 200 kW) and 494 Nm, but a temporary boost function bumps the peak horsepower to 313 PS (308 hp or 230 kW) under hard acceleration.

In doing so, the 0-100 km/h time is 5.7 seconds, and the compact Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) is capable of hitting a top speed of 180 km/h. The electric motors draw power from an underfloor-mounted lithium-ion battery that has an energy capacity of 64.7 kWh, which is good for a range of 440 km following the WLTP standard.

For charging, the iX1 is capable of DC fast charging (CCS2 connection) at a max of 130 kW, with a 10-80% state of charge achieved in just 29 minutes. Alternatively, there’s also AC charging (Type 2 connection) at 11 kW that takes 6.5 hours to fully recharge the battery.

Visually, the iX1 doesn’t differ heavily from a regular, non-EV X1, with key identifiers being the dedicated “i” badging on the grille and blue ring on the BMW roundel. The M Sport package that comes standard adds a more aggressive front bumper with a hexagonal-shaped lower intake and prominent air curtains.

Meanwhile, the rear bumper sports a diffuser-like element and has a large blacked-out portion that mimics what you find on the latest 3 Series we have here. In terms of dimensions, the iX1 follows the X1, which is larger than the previous F48 model, measuring in at 4,500 mm long (+53 mm), 1,845 mm wide (+24 mm) and with a wheelbase of 2,692 mm (+22 mm). However, the height of the iX1 is kept at 1,616 mm compared to the internal combustion engine variants that measure 1,642 mm tall.

As part of the X1’s redesign for greater presence, the iX1 also carries a larger front grille and new headlamps (adaptive LEDs for our market) with inverted L-shaped bars marking up the daytime running light signature. Cleaner surfacing along the sides leads to the rear LED taillights with an L-shaped light signature.

Inside, the dashboard design is like that of the U06 2 Series Active Tourer, with the BMW Curved Display taking centre stage with its 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.7-inch central infotainment touchscreen. Both form the Live Cockpit Professional system and run BMW Operating System 8, with the latter including a personal voice assistant as well as support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Elsewhere, the raised centre console is without a rotary controller that is typical of iDrive systems. Instead, it only has a switch-type gear selector, controls for specific vehicle functions, a start button and media controls. Ahead of this area is where you’ll find the cupholders and a vertical space that integrates a wireless phone charger.

Equipment that comes standard for the iX1 xDrive30 M Sport in Malaysia includes 19-inch M light-alloy wheels in a double-spoke style 871M bicolour design, welcome lights, an M leather steering wheel, an M anthracite headliner, ambient lighting, powered front sport seats with driver-side memory function, dual-zone climate control, a head-up display, a Harman Kardon Hi-Fi sound system, Digital Key Plus, adaptive M suspension and Connected Package Professional.

For driver assists, there’s the Driving Assistant Plus package with Hill Start Assist, Speed Limiter, Attentiveness Assistant, Lane Departure Warning with active steering intervention, Front Collision Warning and Left Turn Warning – both with braking function – along with Speed Limit Info and Evasion Assistant. These are joined by Parking Assistant Plus that includes a 360-degree camera.

The iX1 is offered in six exterior colours, namely Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Cape York Green, M Portimao Blue, Storm Bay and Space Silver. The interior gets Vernasca leather appointments available in either Alcantara Black with Blue Contrast Stitching, Black or Mocha.

Proton X50 R3 20th Anniversary Edition, 200 units only

Hello and good morning from the media day of the Malaysia Autoshow 2023, which opens to the public tomorrow. You won’t miss this one as you enter the event’s main hall, a matte black Proton X50 with yellow accents, an unmistakable R3 signature. The showcar’s plates read “R3 Concept”. What’s this and can you buy it?

Yes. Official details are scant, but we’ve gathered from the Proton booth that there will be a “Proton X50 R3 20th Anniversary Edition” that’s open for booking, and only at the Malaysia Autoshow 2023. The carmaker will make 200 units of this special edition, basically the X50 with an accessories package.

We don’t know how much it is yet, and this showcar is not the final product, it was stressed. The car you see here is a ‘concept’ and it features matte black wrap with yellow highlights and a grey stripe, a bodykit, a more aggressive ‘double wing’ rear spoiler (Binyue S-style) and unique rims. Behind the latter, you’ll see yellow brake calipers.

We have been told that there could be possible upgrades to the brakes, suspension and even power from the 1.5 TGDi engine, although nothing has been finalised at this point.

Inside, the showcar sports alloy pedals in a signature R3 design, R3 carpets and the R3 logo embroidered on the front seat headrests. Once again, what you see here may not be what you will get, which could be more, or less.

Despite the fact that the specs and content of the Proton X50 R3 20th Anniversary Edition aren’t confirmed yet, never mind the price, you can put your name down for one at the Malaysia Autoshow 2023. Like what you see? We’ll post updates if and when available.
